CMA Raises Concerns Over the Use of 'His Majesty's Government'

Introduction

The Constitutional Monarchy Association has been raising concerns about the growing use of the phrase “UK Government” in place of the constitutionally correct “His Majesty’s Government”.

Ministers and officials owe their authority to the Crown. The correct form of words reflects that the Government acts in His Majesty’s name — a point of constitutional principle, not mere tradition.

Below we set out the CMA’s correspondence and the responses received to date.

CMA Action

In March 2026 the CMA wrote to Members of Parliament setting out our concerns over the use of “UK Government”. We also drew attention to journal coverage of the issue and to related correspondence.
